FCD is proud that, in the last 6 years, 100% of our participants have graduated High School. These students participated in after school tutoring sessions, academic enhancement programs, and mentoring in their preferred language. This is in contrast to the graduation rate nationally in 2023 of 83.7% (https://nationaldeafcenter.org/resources/research-data). This is a life altering impact for teens at FCD.
Many of our programs focus specifically on literacy or include a literacy component. The students from Family Center on Deafness attend both public and private schools and participate in our after school programs. The focus on reading skills in the Elementary Programs resulted in measurable grade level improvements. One teacher reported that a FCD participant improved three grade levels, demonstrated by test results. While this was the largest gain, every participant showed measurable improvements over the course of September 2023 - December 2023. Readers are leaders and FCD is proud to help students lead the way!
Sign language has been shown to have numerous benefits for individuals who are Deaf or hard of hearing, including enhanced cognitive development, improved social skills, and increased access to information and communication (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6796673/). Here at FCD we are thrilled to be working with families to create a language inclusive environment. In a recent survey, 100% of respondents reported gaining the ability to communicate or connect with their family more effectively. One respondent said, "The best gift you ever gave me was teaching me sign language, because as long as I can move my fingers, I can communicate."
Through our County, State and National alliances Family Center on Deafness has been able to share their strategies, methodology and successes with a wide range of Deaf and hard of hearing organizations. "Effective partnering with state/local agencies that primarily serve the Deaf/HoH community and also offer interpreter services is often the most effective way to learn about and ensure equal communication access. These programs can offer support in determining effective communication modes, technology needs and support services or resources available." (www.nationaldisabilityinstitute.org) This collaborative activity allows FCD to impact other Deaf and hard of hearing communities overcoming geographic barriers.
